The 'CTO-to-IC at Anthropic' pattern is the cleanest revealed-preference signal in tech right now, and it deserves more weight than 'they're going to where the action is.' Those people are giving up org-chart compounding (manage X, manage 10X, etc.) in exchange for tool-compounding (work with the latest Claude internals before anyone else, manipulate frontier training directly). That's not a lateral move. It's a bet that for the next five to ten years, the AI-collaboration ladder is steepening faster than the human-management ladder is. Someone with CTO-grade options choosing IC at a frontier lab over keeping the title is information about which ladder they expect to compound from here.

It's also worth naming that this is a high-conviction bet, not a safe one. The recursive-self-improvement thesis only pays off if the AI-on-AI loop closes fast enough to vindicate the equity and title concessions these people are making. If it stalls or hits a capability wall, the Karpathy plus CTO-pipeline cohort gave up something real and got nothing structural back. The market is reading this as 'flight to the prestige destination.' What's actually happening is closer to a venture bet by the most informed insiders, made with their careers as the capital.

The small business owners I work with on AI automation ask me every week which company to pay attention to. Karpathy choosing Anthropic over every other option is as clear a signal as they get. For anyone building practical AI for business right now, this is the one to watch.

This is pretty incredible stuff. One of the most brilliant minds in AI right now is joining one of the leading companies in AI in the world. Superpower is built haha
